Session Details:
The Arc of Understanding: Making Each Class a Memorable Experience
In this interactive presentation, I will share some techniques I used in my 40+ years of teaching for making classes more memorable—and helping students better grasp key concepts—by adding narrative hooks, simple activities, and connections to the wider world.
Gamifying Review Activities
Taking a creative approach to review activities, students are challenged to solve physics crossword puzzles, deactivate doomsday devices, solve a murder mystery, and more. All of this while "secretly" doing physics problems! 4-5 different activities will be provided for participants to try out and discuss ways it can be adapted for their classrooms.
Applications of AI in the physics classroom
I will demonstrate using A.I. as a teacher tool and then share a lesson in which I had students use A.I. to elevate their thinking about a recently completed lab. Participants will have the opportunity to workshop these ideas into their own lesson planning during the session.
Colorado Area Physics Teachers Workshop
Participants are requested to bring their favorite demo/activity/lab involving magnetism. The workshop will start with a sharathon, followed by a magnetism kit build activity and peer collaboration.
CO/WY AAPT Business Meeting
All workshop participants are automatically members of the Colorado/Wyoming Section of the AAPT, and we will hold a short business meeting during the day. In addition to general updates, we will elect (or re-elect) members of the executive board. While President Elect, Fall Vice President, Spring Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Webmaster, and Member at Large are all on the ballot, the 3 most important to fill are:
- President Elect: This one-year position is part of a three-year commitment in the presidential chain (President-Elect → President → Past President). The President-Elect has no formal duties but serves as an apprentice to learn the role before becoming President.
- Spring Vice President: The Spring Vice President organizes the annual spring meeting. If you are interested in hosting at your school or institution, this may be the role for you. The rest of the board will help with planning, but the Vice President serves as the main coordinator. This position may be shared.
- Member-at-Large: Members-at-Large help broaden the representation and diversity of the board. There are no specific assigned duties; members attend board meetings and assist as needed.
Other Details:
- Breakfast and light snacks will be provided!
- Come join us at a local restaurant after the meeting for a informal hangout.
